UWIC honour a “precious gift” for rugby great Gerald
Rugby legend Gerald Davies described receiving his Honorary Fellowship from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) as a “precious gift” during a celebration of achievement graduation ceremony.
The first day of UWIC’s graduation ceremonies proved to be a huge success in the grand setting of the Iconic Wales Millennium Centre
Receiving his award during the Cardiff School of Sport ceremony, Wales and Lions legend Gerald Davies CBE DL, said: “Thank you for bestowing this honour on me. It is with a huge sense of privilege that I accept the Honorary Fellowship from such an exceptional institution.
“It is a precious gift from a famous institution. I am especially grateful that you should think me worthy of being an Honorary Fellow of UWIC; to belong to an institution of distinction where famous men and women have walked its corridors.”
Fashion designer David Emanuel also received an Honorary Fellowship during the Cardiff School of Art & Design ceremony, and admitted that the whole occasion left him feeling rather emotional.
“I found it moving and was very touched,” he said. “For me, because I am proud to be Welsh, being honoured by your fellow country makes it really personal; particularly in Cardiff because this is where my career began.”
It was a welcome return to UWIC for Bridgend-born David, who is an alumnus of UWIC’s Cardiff School of Art & Design after completing a foundation course in the early ‘70s, before launching his hugely successful career which has seen him become a significant figure in the world of fashion and design for three decades. Putting a typical glamorous spin on the graduation ceremony he added: “The students had a catwalk to sachet across, it was great!
